In the gospel reading today we continue to hear from the Bread Discourse in John 6. This week's passage begins with the final verse from last week's reading ('I am the bread of life ...'), and picks it up a few verses later where John is expanding upon the theme of Jesus as the bread of life.. So we can think of the first verse as giving the text and the remainder giving the explanation of the text, in which it is made clear that the bread in question is no ordinary bread, rather it leads us more deeply into the mystery of who Jesus is. John is presenting to us Jesus as the bread of life, who will give this bread in the form of his life - his flesh and blood. To give his 'flesh' is to surrender his own human life so that the world may have eternal life. He gave his life, in life and in death, to enable fullness of life to all, that all may choose to be 'chosen', that all may accept God's choice to love and accept them. Again, we cannot miss the connection with the Eucharist. Here we take bread 'the body of Christ' - and a cup 'the blood of Christ' - and thank God in Christ for the liberation we have received. 'Christ's self-giving deepens our sense of thanksgiving (eucharist) and praise, and evokes lives lived in gratitude and service. We will think a little more about these things as we continue to explore the nature of our Eucharistic liturgy, with a special focus today on the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving.
