Dear St Philip's Friends,

I am glad to be able to welcome you to St Philip's this morning for our Sunday Eucharist. Thank you for being with us.

It is a particular pleasure to welcome Amanda (known to her friends as Mandy) Forbes. No doubt she is known to many of you, and you will be delighted to see her. During our worship Mandy will sing "Et incarnatus est" ("And became flesh [human]") from Mozart's Mass in C Minor. I am sure this will be an inspiring experience for all of us, lifting our hearts and minds in worship of God.

It is also highly appropriate for another reason today. Creation and our responsible care of the environment is a special focus for us on this day after St Francis' Day. Back in 1989 the then Ecumenical (Eastern Orthodox) Patriarch Dimitrios invited all Churches to observe 1 September — the first day of the ecclesiastical year for the Orthodox Churches — as a day for the "protection of the natural environment", and to offer "prayers to the Maker of all, both in the thanksgiving for the great gift of creation and in petition for its protection and salvation".

Last year, at an ecumenical meeting in Europe it was agreed that a five-week period, from 1 September to 4 October (St Francis' Day) be dedicated to prayer for the protection of Creation and the promotion of sustainable lifestyles that reverse our contribution to climate change".
So, it is good for us to be making that our focus today. However, we do it not just because of current concerns about climate change, but because of fundamental aspects of our faith &8212# a profound theology of Creation and of Incarnation. Mandy's contribution to our worship this morning will help us to ground our present environmental concerns in this faith.

We all continue to be very concerned about Rob. To add to all the other health problems, last Wednesday he had a mild heart attack. In the ICU he was being cared for very well and being kept quite comfortable. We continue to pray for him and for all who care for him, and we do so sustained by our faith in God the Creator whom we see most clearly in the love, grace and compassion of Jesus.

Every blessing to you for the week ahead, Ray Williamson
