Dear Friends,

A very warm welcome to St Philip's this morning as we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. It is a wonderful day to gather for worship. It is one of the great festivals in the Church's year, often referred to as the Church's birthday.

On this final day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Daily Scripture and Prayer resource directs our thinking towards our ministry of 'proclaiming hope in a world of separation' and offers the following reflection: "When Christians gather to pray for unity, they are motivated and sustained by hope. The strength of the prayer for unity comes from God's renewal of the created world; its wisdom from the Holy Spirit who breathes new life on dry bones; its integrity from opening ourselves completely to God, to be transformed into instruments of the unity Christ wills for his disciples." That is a wonderful reminder offered to us by a group of Christians in Korea.

Today we are also still in the midst of another Week of Prayer that is observed in Australia — the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation. This is always between two set dates: 27th May (the 1967 referendum date) and 3rd June (the date of the Mabo judgement in 1992). We have seen significant actions in the past two years which have helped Australia move to a better understanding and acknowledgement of the pain and suffering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Graeme Mundine, the Executive Officer of the NCCA's Indigenous Commission has said, "Actions such as the apology to the Stolen Generations, the Statement of Intent on health; even the flawed Northern Territory Intervention are all concrete steps towards reconciliation. As we celebrate these actions we must not lose sight of the fact that reconciliation is not only a political issue and is not something that the Government alone must instigate and act on. …True and lasting reconciliation will only come from a sustained change of heart at all levels of our community." These are other matters for our reflection and prayers at this time.

Every blessing to you for today, and for the week ahead,

Ray

Help those affected by disasters ...

Dear Friend of ABM, Since Cyclone Nargis drove a path of destruction through Myanmar (Burma) just over one year ago, we have heard little of the recovery and rebuilding operation. Over 160,000 people died during and after the cyclone — more than half the death toll of the Asian Tsunami. ABM is blessed to host the Archbishop of Myanmar's visit next month and invites you to learn about what has happened in Myanmar over the last year.
Launch of the ABM Disaster Appeal Tuesday 23 June, 7.30pm
St John's Anglican Hall, 43 Constitution Ave., Reid
Guests must register for this event. Please do so by calling 1300 302 663 or 02 9264 1021 or email info@abm.asn.au. You are welcome to invite others who may also be interested in Myanmar. Seats are limited and will be allocated to those who register early. We hope you can join us for these rare events. www.abmission.org/Documents/mid-year-appeal-2009
