Dear St Philip's friends,

A very warm welcome to you for our Eucharist at St Philip's this morning as we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.  Being the last Sunday in September, it is also the day that member churches of our National Council of Churches have set aside as Social Justice Sunday.  This year, the resource material is entitled "Faces of Poverty".  It asks all Australians to look at our response to the many faces of poverty; to learn; to do; and to pray.  It helps us to do so through four special stories that are told so as to inspire us to reflect on the meaning of poverty and to be moved to offer a Christian response.

I know you are all deeply concerned about Rob and like to know the latest news about him.  It also helps us in our praying.  This week the news is that, after being re-admitted to hospital ten days ago for a relatively minor medical procedure, on Tuesday the doctors decided to operate again.  The result of both is that Rob has been greatly relieved of the pain and other discomfort he had been experiencing, and the doctors have advised that the chemotherapy begin later this week.  Both Rob and Sandy are extremely grateful for your prayers and support and all the loving greetings they have received.  Please continue to hold them both and their family in your prayers.

I also want to say 'thank you' for all the special efforts being made by many of you in order to maintain the life of the parish during this time of Rob's illness.  So many ordinary, seemingly mundane, tasks are necessary, and are faithfully done by those who have taken responsibility for them.  Rosters help us to keep all these things going, and for convenience, these rosters (including the cleaning roster) are placed on the notice board near the vestry door.  Please keep your eye on them to ensure everything will continue to run very smoothly.  Thank you again for everything that is being done.

Every blessing to you for the week ahead, Ray Williamson

Jesse Kim left Canberra yesterday to take up a new job in Wellington New Zealand at short notice.  He was farewelled at Home Group during the week and sends his thanks to all the St. Philip's folks for their friendship and fellowship.

Congratulations to Ray Williamson on receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) at a ceremony in Sydney last week. The honour, announced on 9th June, is "for service to the promotion of ecumenism and to community welfare, particularly through collaborative projects with the government to establish affordable housing." During Ray's service as General Secretary of the NSW Ecumenical Council from 1986 to 2007 the membership and work of the Council considerably. The House of Welcome agency was formed as part of the ecumenical refugee program and Churches Community Housing Ltd was established to provide affordable social housing for people on a low income, especially for those requiring support services.
