Subject:This week @ St Philip's O'Connor - Sunday 28 June 2009 From: Date:Mon, 29 Jun 2009 18:03:24 +1000 To:St Philips Anglican Church O'Connor “Come and see,” said Philip Welcome to St Philip’s O’Connor! Sunday 28 June 2009 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost Readings: Lamentations 3. 22-33 Psalm 30 - page 249 2 Corinthians 8.7-15 Mark 5.21-43 Dear Friends, Welcome to St Philip’s this morning for our Eucharist on this fourth Sunday after Pentecost. The gospel reading today is part of a series of four demonstrations of the power of the Kingdom of God to transform human experience delivering us from all that would diminish life and keep us from relationship with God, and enabling us to come into fullness of life with God. After giving us a series of parables that teach about the nature of the Kingdom, Mark gives these examples of how the Kingdom of God works in practice. The first of the four demonstrations was found in last week’s passage – the stilling of the storm, rescuing from the chaos and meaninglessness that evil can bring. Then comes Mark’s description of the healing of the demoniac (which we don’t hear), in which we see the power of God to deliver from evil forces that would reduce human life to chaos. The third and fourth demonstrations are the intertwining stories in today’s passage. Both are about the healing of women, one afflicted for twelve years, one only alive for twelve years. Through the power of the Reign of God, both are restored to wholeness. There are just a few things to mention today. As we come to end of the month, I want to remind you of the appeal for Nungalinya College, which is the National Indigenous Education and Training College of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Uniting Churches. Please support it as generously as you can. We are coming to the end of the Old Testament study series: there is only one more session to go. The Wednesday morning group will meet this week, but the evening group meeting is being deferred till the following week, and so those who have been coming will have a free Wednesday evening this week We have received a notice about the next Creating Safe Ministries workshop.
