(due to long weekend) leighton.ruth@grapevine.com.au or 6161 7133 Dear Friends, While I was not at Synod, except for the opening Eucharist, I have heard that it went well and that some good discussion on some important issues took place. We will no doubt hear more about it from our representatives. Synod is an important part of our Anglican way of being church and while there is much about it that is often quite tedious it is one of the important ways we seek to hear God together and discern the tasks ahead for our church in this region. Sometimes the most menial of tasks do have important consequences, not only for ourselves but for the wider plan of God's purposes. Today readings from the book of Esther in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Gospel of Mark are something of a reminder of this and of God's providence I our lives. Esther may not be a story you have read, but it is worth reading. It is a story of salvation and yet the name of God is not mentioned and nor is there any account of the Jews in the story offering prayers throughout their trials. And yet the strong inference is that God is there throughout and bringing salvation to pass. All this suggests to me a quiet trust in God's providence - God's care, presence and guidance -- that I hope will be part of my daily life and work. May we all know this kind of trust in God's providence this week. Don To our dear Friends at St Philip's, Thank you so much for your most beautiful card, which we received with great surprise and delight. We are very touched by your thoughtful messages of good wishes for our new life in the Northern Rivers. We are still settling in of course, however we are so enjoying constant balmy weather, friendly people and the preciousness of being near our children and grandchildren living up this way. We see Mo each day! We will come to Canberra regularly to see friends and dear family and will take those opportunities to come and see you all. We are thrilled with the announcement that Rebecca Newland is to be the new Rector of St Philip's. Our home phone is: 02 6628 8989 New email: adbanners@bigpond.com Love to you all, from Doug and Anne Bannerman A Gift for Ray You are invited to make a contribution towards a gift for Ray, to thank him for the time he has been with us at St Philip's. Contributions can be put in an envelope marked 'Ray's gift' in the collection plate. Thank you. Prayer For Healing Service The next Bishop's Prayer For Healing Service will be Wednesday October 7 at 7.00pm, St. John's Canberra. There is (as always) much sickness, anxiety and grief across our diocesan church family. This service is an opportunity to present such concerns to our Lord, Jesus and to draw strength and comfort and release from Him. I do hope that parishes will conduct similar ministries locally and this service allows us all to see how such an event might be organised and structured. Five Key Points from September Parish Council meeting 1. The major drainage work at the Rectory is now complete. A further Working Bee on the Rectory will be held on October 17. 2. The Kindergarten has proposed a fence with a gate and associated pathways between the Church and the Hall, to try and stop bikes using the courtyard as a thoroughfare, which is dangerous for the children and adds to the deterioration of the courtyard. The kindergarten would fund the work. The Council has given in principle agreement subject to seeing the details of the work proposed. 3. The Council is appreciative of the response from parishioners to assist with the risk management review. 4. Bel has now departed, and action has begun to investigate a possible replacement for the Children's Ministry work. 5. Many thanks to Ben Dyer for the new notice board in the back of the church to display the Children's Ministry work. Parish Governance The Parish Council has recently reviewed the governance arrangements of the Council itself and its links with other groups in the Parish. Good governance requires clear lines of responsibility and communication. St. Philips has much of this in place but the Council considered that there was room for some tightening up. The Council has appointed certain members to be points of contact/liaison for particular aspects of Parish life. This will help parishioners and members of sub-groups know which Council members should be contacted in relation to particular matters and provide for improved lines of communication from and to the Council, particularly for the active sub-groups and committees.
