Dear Friends,
The Easter season is almost over. Today is the Seventh Sunday of Easter, and I gladly welcome you to St Philip's for our celebration of the Eucharist this morning.
Today also is the beginning of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (WPCU). There are a couple of resources to assist us in our observance of this week. There is a small Prayer Card available for everyone to take, to use each day this week, and to keep as a reminder of the on-going quest for the visible unity of the Church. I have also made copies of a leaflet that sets out the bible readings, reflections and prayers for each of the eight days of prayer for unity. This comes from the resources for the 2009 WPCU that have been prepared internationally and based on the initial work done by an ecumenical group in Korea. Please remember also the special observance of the Week that has been planned for this area. At 8.00am next Saturday we are invited to the Churches of Christ, Limestone Ave, Ainslie to have breakfast and pray together. For catering purposes, we have to give the numbers by tomorrow, so I would be grateful if you would write your name on the paper for this purpose.
The WPCU concludes at Pentecost, the date of which is determined by the date of Easter. Not always, but often it partly coincides with another Week of Prayer in Australia — the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation. This is always between two set dates: 27th May and 3rd June, and follows immediately after Sorry Day, 26th May, the date of the release of the report from the Royal Commission into the Stolen Generations. This, too, is a matter for our prayers, and you will find that the leaflet of daily readings and prayers for the WPCU will also direct your thinking and prayers to matters relating to Reconciliation.
Yes, next Sunday is Pentecost — one of the great festivals in the Church's year, often referred to as the Church's birthday. Red is the colour for the celebration — both in the church and on each person. Please wear your red…!
Ray
