Dear Friends,
Welcome to our Eucharist at St Philip's this morning on this third Sunday after Pentecost.
Today's gospel reading, recounting Jesus stilling the storm, draws a number of Mark's most frequent and basic themes together into one story. One theme is about Jesus' identity. With the disciples we see the very human Jesus asleep in the boat in the middle of the storm. Storms and water in the ancient Hebrew tradition represent the forces of evil and chaos that God alone can control. When Jesus is roused from sleep by his frightened disciples he calms the storm and the disciples recognise in him the power and presence God. They ask the question, "Who is this, that the wind and the waves obey him"?. It is the fundamental question raised by the ministry of Jesus.
This story points us back to other biblical stories, such as the creation, the flood, the crossing the Reed Sea and the River Jordan, to seek the answer. We also see in the story Mark's interest in nurturing the faith of his readers. With the disciples we are invited to answer the question about Jesus' identity and we are challenged in turn by Jesus' question, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?". Mark's story encourages us to trust God — that God will be with us through all the "storms" of life, not necessarily rescuing us from them, as God did not rescue Jesus, (or Job or Paul in our other readings), but in giving us the grace and strength we need and in always opening new possibilities for us for life and growth and love.
One matter from the Parish Council today concerns the use of incense. The question was referred to the PC from the Annual Meeting, and since then a great deal of consideration has been given to the matter by both the PC and the Liturgy Group. The outcomes of all these deliberations have been brought together into a small leaflet which is available for you this morning. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the process in a careful and sensitive manner.
Every blessing to you for today, and for the week ahead,
Ray

Help those affected by disasters…
Dear Friend of ABM,
Since Cyclone Nargis drove a path of destruction through Myanmar (Burma) just over one year ago, we have heard little of the recovery and rebuilding operation. Over 160,000 people died during and after the cyclone — more than half the death toll of the Asian Tsunami. ABM is blessed to host the Archbishop of Myanmar's visit next month and invites you to learn about what has happened in Myanmar over the last year.
Launch of the ABM Disaster Appeal Tuesday 23 June, 7.30pm
St John's Anglican Hall, 43 Constitution Ave., Reid
Guests must register for this event. Please do so by calling 1300 302 663 or 02 9264 1021 or email info@abm.asn.au. You are welcome to invite others who may also be interested in Myanmar. Seats are limited and will be allocated to those who register early. We hope you can join us for these rare events.

A prayer from the Ecumenical Prayer Cycle
God of life, you put in human beings the imprint of your image and likeness
and made us to participate with you in your creation.
Forgive our incapacity to respect and protect life in all its forms.
God of justice, you call us to travel this path
which is the only route leading to true peace.
Forgive our daily acts of injustice which condemn many, many persons to death
by hunger, exclusion and war, and lead us to the abyss of endless violence.
God, incarnate in history, forgive us because we imprison you in our dogmas,
limiting you to our religious institutions and crucifying you alongside the vulnerable of our time.
O God, strengthen us in our daily work for a world more just,
accepting differences, built on diversity.
Renew our commitment to peace with justice,
a commitment which denounces the arrogance
of those who believe that they are powerful and own the lives of all the rest.
Give us a vision to banish violence in all its forms.
Establish as the foundation of our lives, and the lives of our people,
respect, equality, truth and justice.
