"Come and see," said Philip Welcome to St Philip's O'Connor! Sunday 1 November 2009 All Saints All Souls Readings: Isaiah 25.6-9; Psalm 24; Revelation 21.1-6 John 11.32-44 Dear Friends, Welcome to worship at St Philip's today as we celebrate All Saints' Day with an observance of All Souls. On this day the church looks backward to recall with gratitude the lives of people of faith who have gone before us. We remember 'great ones' from the distant past and those whose lives and memories remain painfully and preciously close. The Scripture readings today place our rememberings firmly in the context of God's future and fill our reflections with hope. The readings from Isaiah and Revelation look forward to a future when there is an end to the pain of hunger, grief and loneliness. It is a future when God dwells with God's people and is pictured as a great feast. The question of when this glorious future will come about is not answered. But the gospel story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead reminds us that God's future breaks through even in the present, and as it did for Mary and Martha, it fills us with joy. It was very gratifying to see so many people from both the St Philip's and Holy Cross congregations here last Thursday evening for the travellers' Report Back. We certainly enjoyed sharing a little of our experiences and telling something of the situation we encountered. It was a great evening, with delicious food ? for which our appreciation goes to Kerry-Anne and Ian. But thanks to everyone for all your interest and support, and thank you too for the generous donation which I will pass on to the Middle East Council of Churches for the work in support of Palestinian refugees, especially in Gaza. Every blessing to you for today, and for the week ahead, Ray Bishop Stuart's latest 'YouTube' address can be accessed via our Parish Website www.stphilipsoconnor.org.au. Just click on the Bishop's face! A big thank you from CAMRA CAMRA (Canberra Academy of Music & Related Arts) would like to thank St Philip's for their continued support and providing us a home. We had a very successful G & S Masterclass weekend and the catering by Food @ St Philip's was outstanding! Food @ St Philip's Thanks to everyone who baked, cooked, setup, prepared food, served & cleaned up for CAMRA's G & S weekend. We made $921 from the weekend for the Parish. Calico bags for Children's Ministry Fiona is chasing calico bags to make children's activity bags for the church. They need to be able to hold a folder - so slightly larger than an A4 page is perfect! If you have some cluttering up your house that you no longer need, please leave them at the back of the church with the children's resources! Pandora's at O'Connor Thank you everyone for all your support this year - thinking about the roster for next year we realise we will need some more help as some of our volunteers suffer with ill heath and can't do their shifts next year. Even if you can only help occasionally or be prepared to go on the emergency roster that would be great -see Margaret Woodbridge, Ann Munro or myself and you will be warmly welcomed. There are always two volunteer staff on at Pandora's so you don't have to cope on your own and our customers are great! Kerry-Anne Cousins.
