Subject:This week @ St Philip's O'Connor - Sunday 19 July 2009 From: Date:Mon, 20 Jul 2009 19:12:48 +1000 To:St Philips Anglican Church O'Connor “Come and see,” said Philip Welcome to St Philip’s O’Connor! Sunday 19 July 2009 Seventh Sunday after Pentecost Readings: Jeremiah 23.1-16 Psalm 23 Ephesians 2.11-22 Mark 6.30-34, 53-56 Dear Friends, Welcome to St Philip’s this morning. On this Seventh Sunday after Pentecost the readings focus on an issue that is a problem for many in contemporary society – getting the work-life balance right. The hectic busyness of modern western society is partly fuelled by a desire to be needed and to matter. When this desire is not met by faith, work can become a way to justify our existence and maintain our dignity. People identify the symbol of this trend in our society as the mobile phone and the ‘cultic practice’ of the belief is the relentless attention people pay to text messages and emails. In the gospel passage, Jesus welcomes the disciples back from their mission. As part of their debriefing Jesus becomes aware of his friends’ tiredness and invites them to a time of quiet, a time to withdraw from the demands and busyness of their lives. The disciples and Jesus need the time to renew their energy, their connection with each other, and their relationship with God. We all need time and space to gain new vision and energy, to refocus our lives, and reconnect with who we are as followers of Jesus. Time for prayer, reflection and the enjoyment of life as God’s primary gift to us are essential for human flourishing, spiritual, physical and emotional. Today, we have the unexpected (and sad for us) news that Doug and Anne Bannerman are moving from Canberra to Alstonville in northern NSW. And we find that this morning will be the last time they are both with us at St Philip’s before they move. After a long association with the parish, it is a big change for them and for us, and we will miss them greatly. But as they prepare to move, and Anne to take up her new position at the Southern Cross University library, we assure them of our very good wishes and prayers, and thank them for all they have contributed to this parish community and all they have meant to us as friends. Finally for today, another reminder – to those for whom it is relevant - of the next Creating Safe Ministries workshop on Saturday 22nd August at the Gungahlin Anglican Church, 9.30am-3.30pm. Every blessing to you for today, and for the week ahead, Ray Bishop Stuart on Youtube Beloved in Christ Please find the link to my first Youtube message. I am very keen for this message to be heard by as many parishioners as possible. I'm wanting to connect with people in the privacy of their home or office and this may be a good way of achieving such an objective.
