Dear Friends,
Welcome to St Philip's for our celebration of the Eucharist this morning.
We come having been through a week of being deeply distressed by the news of the awful loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the bush fires. The Primate, Archbishop Philip Aspinall, has written to all bishops with up-to-date information on needs in Victoria and expressing his sympathy and concern for people who have lost loved ones, homes, animals, crops, businesses and property in the fires. He says that the Anglican churches at King Lake and Marysville were both destroyed, and he adds, "This is a sad way to be beginning 2009. My earnest prayer is that in this darkness light will shine by God's grace and through the working of the Holy Spirit. May we each play our part in bringing that love and hope to bear in these grim and painful circumstances". This morning, at St Philip's, we will have a retiring collection so that anyone who wishes to donate to the Red Cross Community appeal may do so. Anglicare Victoria has recommended that donations be made to this appeal.
With Lent just 10 days away, material for the Lent Study Groups needs to be ordered and/or prepared this week. There are copies of the leaflet regarding the study options at the back of the church today and I would appreciate receiving the response form by which you can indicate the group to which you intend to come, if you have not already done so. Let me encourage you to join a group. Being part of one is a great help in preparing spiritually for Holy Week and Easter, and a way of reflecting on your spiritual journey in a focussed way.
It is also now only two weeks to the parish's Annual Meeting — Sunday, 1st March — and in preparation for the election of Church Wardens and Parish Council Members, there are some nomination forms available again this morning. Please return them to Shane Woodburn or myself as soon as possible. Thank you.
Every blessing to you for the week ahead,
Ray Williamson

St Philip's Calvary Hospital Ministry and Pastoral Care
The Calvary Ministry team needs some more hands and some new energy. Would you like to help?? If you can spare a few hours on Sunday morning once a month please contact Beryl Blaseotto on 62477230 or blas@goldweb.com.au
This is what you'll be asked to contribute to;
· Visiting patients and listening to their stories
· Providing wheelchair transport for patients to chapel services
Can you help with this important ministry???
The Canberra North Baptist Church picks up bread from Bakers Delight each Wednesday evening for distribution in our community to people who need it (including Pandora's clients). They need help on Wednesdays between 6.30pm and 8pm with (1) to pack the bread from the delivery vehicle into bags and (2) to take the bags of bread around to groups and people in need.
It's a small time commitment for very important and supportive work for the disadvantaged in our community. Please contact Ray Heins on 6232 5767 (h) or 0414 549 243 if you can help regularly or occasionally.
