Dear Friends,
May I offer you a very warm welcome to St Philip's this morning as we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter, and as we also celebrate a Baptism at the 10.00 Eucharist.
So I am very pleased to offer a particular welcome to Dustin Jobe Bradley-Smyth, who is to be baptised, and his parents Cherie Bradley and Trent Smyth, and to their family and friends who are joining us for this special occasion.
The Easter season seems to be slipping by rather quickly. It is only three weeks to Pentecost. In Australia, the week leading up to Pentecost is observed as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and in many local areas around the country there will be special ecumenical gatherings to bring Christians together. In this area, at 8.00am on Saturday 30th May, we are invited to the Churches of Christ, Limestone Ave, Ainslie to have breakfast together, pray together and hear Bishop Pat Power, Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, speak on ecumenism. Bishop Power is also Canberran of the Year for 2009. We have to give the numbers attending by Monday 25th May.
On another matter entirely, many of you are aware that Erica and I are heading off with a small group of people to the Holy Land in the second half of September. The trip is being organised through the Middle East Council of Churches and so, in addition to visiting well-known sacred sites in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Galilee, it will allow us to meet local people and to visit a number of the projects supported by the Christmas Bowl. The trip will begin and end in Amman, and so there is also the chance to visit Petra. We would still like to have a few more people in our group. If you are interested please see me and I can give you a brochure that we have put together.
Next Sunday we will be observing Anglicare Sunday, and I am pleased to let you know that Ruth McGorman-Mann we speak to us about the work of Anglicare.
Ray
